Year of the Dragon Celebrations@ Lan Su Chinese Garden (NW Portland) 10AM-5PM daily through Feb. 6th.

Mommy and Me Mondays@ World Forestry Center from 10AM-11AM. Enjoy some entertaining stories and free coffee for parents every Monday through April in this new program! Linda Cohen presents "1000 Mitzvahs"@ Annie Bloom's Books (7834 SW Capitol Hwy, Portland)  from 7-8:30PM. When her father passed away in 2006, Linda Cohen took a spiritual sabbatical to work through her grief. She came out of it resolved to embark upon a project: perform 1,000 of kindness--"mitzvahs"--to honor her father's memory. Join local author - Dawn Babb Prochovnic- as she leads a lively, interactive series of story times. Learn sign language with your kids and enjoy fun music, songs, and stories. Kids can improve their reading skills and make a new friend by reading aloud to therapy dogs. The dog-and-handler teams are registered volunteers with Delta Society's Pet Partners Program, sponsored by DoveLewis. Fertile Ground 2012@ Various locations. Fertile Ground 2012 is a 10-day arts festival that is held through January 29th around the Portland area. This city-wide festival is focused on new work in the Arts. It will feature world premiere projects, staged readings and other arts events from the Portland creative community. We just saw "Oil Change" (musical comedy staged reading with live music) and it was fantastic and $10 per ticket! Go to for more info. Not every event is kid-friendly but many options for date night.

Mochitsuki@ Scottish Rite Center (1512 SW Morrison St., Portland) from 11-4PM.

Enjoy mochi (Japanese rice cake) samples, demos and hands-on activities for all ages including mochi pounding, ikebana (flower arranging), origami, games and more! Also storytelling, music, dancers and acrobatalists featured in 3 different stage shows. Advance tickets are $12 per adult and $5 per child (2-12).
